How to Adopt From Midwest Misfits
How does our adoption process work? We work hard to ensure that the pets that we've pulled from shelters do not end up in the same situation they came from. We've invested a significant amount of time and money into these guys and their well-being is most important to us when selecting a new home.
The first step in the adoption process is to fill out an application on our website. You can select a specific animal to apply for, or contact us with what would work best in your home. Our application asks basic questions that allow us to determine if your home will be a good fit for the animal you're interested in and what kind of pet owner you are. We require 3 references and a veterinary check on all applications. If these are not provided then your application will not be processed.
We require all pets in any potential adopters home to be altered (if age appropriate and medically able), current on all age appropriate vaccinations, testing and prevention--this is required for fosters and adopters by the state we are licensed in. This includes having a current heartworm test and providing your pet with applicable veterinary approved prevention for heartworms, fleas and ticks. If this is something you do not do, or refuse to provide information on, your application will not be approved, this is required for all adopters--zero exceptions. This is a basic responsibility of owning a pet. We will work with adopters to educate on recommended vetting and will approve an application if all qualifications are met after discussing our concerns.
Once we receive your application we will contact your references for information on you and your pet owning history. We also contact your current vet, if you have pets, to ensure the above guidelines have been met. After we receive all references back we will contact you to arrange a meeting with the pet of your choice and to do a home visit if a member or volunteer is in the area. If a home visit is not possible then we may request pictures of your home and yard to ensure they appear to be pet safe.
We do a two week foster-to-adopt period with all adoptions. This gives the dog time to settle in to their new surroundings and the adopter time to assess if it's a good match. We will take back any animal at any time if there is an issue that requires surrendering them.
Fees:
Our adoption fees help to cover some of the cost associated with vetting and caring for our dogs. All dogs are adopted with age appropriate vetting. Adults are spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, heartworm tested, dewormed, receive monthly prevention and are microchipped. Puppies are adopted with age appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, microchip, receive monthly prevention and a spay/neuter contract and deposit to ensure they are altered when they reach the appropriate age.
Dogs over 1 year of age: $200
Dogs under 1 year of age: $300

Here's a current list of our adoptables. If interested in adopting a specific pet, please fill out the application on their page. If you'd like to fill out an application but don't have a pet in mind, please fill out the application at the bottom of this page.
We are all volunteers with full time jobs, please be patient while we process your application. Average processing time is around 5 days as we tend to have multiple applications to process at the same time, but this depends on how quickly your references respond to our inquiries.
